W, 95-69

This was without a doubt the biggest game and the best win in Golden State Valkyries history! Kayla Thorton shined with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Veronica Burton played so well, with 14 points and 12 assists of her own. Both secured their first double-doubles at Ballhalla. And Kate "money" Martin hit an electric long-distance three from across the bay as time expired in the first half. Her three put the Valkyries up 49-28 at the half.
The game was never close from there. Really, it wasn't ever close after the first quarter! The team defense was stifling. We held the Aces to just 24% from three and allowed only 11 assists (to--incredibly--a team with the Point God, Chelsea Gray!).
At Ballhalla, we could see how hard the defense made it for the Aces to make clean passes or plays after the catch. Hands were in passing lanes. Transition defense refused to allow easy bucket. And notably, A'ja Wilson was not able to find a consistent rhythm, despite a clear height advantage.
What an evening. Here are five final thoughts from Ballhalla:
No Podz sighting. But Kevon Looney carried the Warriors' torch courtside!
We're excited for Tip Hayes to return. But right now, this is Kayla Thorton and Veronica Burton's team.
The fans know how to perform a coordinated wave--Ballhalla's first!
After the final buzzer, violet streamers fell from the rafters. We thought we'd just get the streamers for win #1 at Ballhalla
. But if we get them for every win, we're here for it!
Still no mascot.
Natalie Nakase's system was humming! With eurobasket fast approaching, we anticipate roster changes in the next month or two. But with this system in place, we feel good that the team won't lose a step.
